Nov. 4, 2004 – We have carried news on several research projects indicating that dementia can be slowed or prevented by regular activities that stimulate the brain. Now there is a new Website designed to offer senior citizens the tools for regular mental activity. AcuityGames.com says they did the research to put together this shopping site dedicated to providing cognitive fitness products for older adults.

The site designers say they sought products that are both mentally challenging and fun to use.

“A dozen or so years ago, we saw my 70-year old mother struggle with and eventually give up on a complicated jigsaw puzzle that she was working on with my 6-year old son.  When he went on to complete the puzzle with relative ease, her reaction to his accomplishment was textbook grandmotherly, but she was clearly perplexed,” says one of the site’s creators. “Had her brain lost the ability to formulate the strategy required to solve the puzzle?  Was this loss of cognitive ability an inevitable symptom of the aging process? It was this and other similar events that lead to the early inklings of Acuity Games.”

“We started Acuity Games to provide a focused product resource for people who want to improve and maintain the various aspects of cognitive function. We provide a wide range of mentally challenging and entertaining products from the classics to new and innovative computer software and electronics and we are constantly updating our web site to assure that our product catalog stays current and reflects both high quality and good value,” they say on the site.

Over the years, research studies testing the “Use it or Lose It” hypothesis have been conducted and the findings validate the importance of regularly engaging in mental work-outs to improve and maintain the components of cognitive function including memory, reasoning, concentration, problem solving and information processing.  Activities identified as helping in this regard include solving crossword and logic puzzles and “brainteasers”, playing board and card games and generally engaging in challenging pastimes that require strategizing and mental engagement.

“We research, test, and sell a broad range of products. It is the intent of these products to assist with the facilitation of cognitive maintenance and improvement with an emphasis on leisure time, rather than therapeutic, utilization,” they say.

So if you’re someone who’s interested in maintaining your mental edge or someone who regularly spends time trying to remember where you left your car keys, acuitygames.com is a great place to visit.
