Senior Citizens Raise Funds for 42 College Scholarships Charlestown Residents Have Awarded 550 Scholarships Since 1988 CATONSVILLE, MD, June 18, 2003 – Forty-two young people will be going to college with financial scholarships provided by Senior home residents, who have awarded 550 such college grants since 1988. This innovative Scholars Fund was started in 1988 by residents to assist the children of those who work at Charlestown, a community for adults 62 and older, built and managed by Erickson in Catonsville, Maryland. Tomorrow, Charlestown will present this year’s scholarships ranging from $4,000 to $10,000. “The purpose of this program is to encourage our students to continue their education beyond high school,” states Michael Conord, executive director of Charlestown. “It’s amazing to watch this fund grow bigger every year, helping more and more students. And it’s all done by the residents. The best part is when they graduate college and come back to visit or even work here as several former scholars have done.” Charlestown has helped send over 550 young men and women on to higher education. They have raised over one and a half million dollars as a way of saying “thank you” to these “hard working students” who have worked a minimum of 1,000 hours in Charlestown’s six restaurants and other areas while attending high school. “And it’s a win-win situation for scholars and residents who build warm, lasting relationships with each other, not to mention employment for 256 teenagers in a tight economy,” says Nancy Abramson, Public Relations Manager For more information go to www.ericksoncommunities.com. |
