Following is Wood’s description of the winners.

“Our winning teams included two of the four women’s cups the Althea Gibson (70’s) and the Queens (75’s). This was the fourth World Championship in a row for the US Queen’s Cup. The men won three of their five cups - Von Cramm  (60s), Jack Crawford (70s) and Gardner Mulloy (80s). These three US teams were all defending their titles.

“For the Von Cramm Cup it was the second in a row, for the Crawford Cup it was the third straight victory, and for the Mulloy, it was the ninth out of ten. The men’s Britannia Cup (65s) and Bitsy Grant Cup (75s) teams lost in the finals and the women’s Alice Marble Cup (60s) placed fourth while the Kitty Godfree Cup( 65s) was fifth.

“Unique among the teams was a married couple who not only played for the US but both played on a winning  team - Boots Van Nostrand played #2 singles on the Althea Gibson Cup and King Van Nostrand was the #1 player for the Jack Crawford Cup.

“During the week following the World Team Championships (Oct 23-29) the US players continued to be “best in show” by winning 14 of 21 World Individual Championships - singles and doubles.

“The women’s singles titles went to Donna Fales of Coral Gables, FL (65s), Louise Russ of Boca Raton, FL (75s) and Dorothy Knode of Huntington Beach, CA(80s). This was the first year that the women’s 80+ was an official ITF age division.

“The US also had three champions in the men’s singles - Jimmy Parker of Houston, TX ( 60s), King Van Nostrand of Vero Beach, FL (70s) and Grayton Nichols of Hanford, CA (80s).

“The women’s  doubles titles went to Charleen Hillebrand of San Pedro, CA and Frances MacLennan of Great Britain (60s), Doris DeVries of Reno, NV and Susanne Clark of New City, NJ ( 65s), Belmar Gunderson of River Fall, WI and Mary Boswell of Damascus, MD (70s), Louise Russ and Diane Hoffman of Chestnut Hill, MA (75s).

“The men also came up with four doubles championships: Jimmy Parker and Ken Robinson of San Carlos, CA (60s), George Sarantos of Fresno, CA and Hank Leichfried of Laguna Woods, CA ( 65s), Richard Doss of Rancho Mirage, CA and Gordon Davis of Encino, CA (70s), and Grayton Nichols and Tony Franco of Briarcliff, NY ( 80s).”
