Students from the Zina Garrison All Court Tennis Academy present a check to Jim Robb of Reliant Energy, as Houston Mayor Bill White looks on

Tennis Kids Raise Money for Elderly in Houston

July 29, 2004 - On July 15, students from the Zina Garrison All Court Tennis Academy held a tennis tournament to benefit Houston's elderly. The project was conceived by the students over a four-week period as their summer community service project. The main objective was to raise money to assist the elderly in paying their energy bills during the hot Houston summer.

Kids from the Academy signed their own tournament sponsors: Redstone Bank, Randall's, Smoothie King, A & E the graphics complex all donated in-kind gifts. The City of Houston donated the courts, What-a-burger donated breakfast tacos and coupons for giveaways and Coca Cola provided all the beverages.

Mayor Bill White presented a proclamation declaring July 15 "Zina Kidz Care" Day in Houston, Texas. He came out at the end of the tournament along with Jim Robb, Vice President of Reliant Energy. Several of our sponsors and NBC local anchor Rachel McNeil presented the prizes.

Students then paid $10 each to play in their own tournament, solicited money from family, friends, churches and Zina board members. The total raised for Reliant Energy was $2853 to help pay for seniors' summer light bills.
