Grandparents Found in Compromising Position at Beach

Dec. 10, 2004 - Two Malaysian grandparents, who happen to be in-laws, have been detained by religious authorities in the northern Perak state after they were caught allegedly having sex by the beach in broad daylight, a news report said today.

Officials from the state Islamic department said the 56-year-old man would be charged with committing "indecent acts" with his 51-year old partner, who also happens to be his sister-in-law. Both are still married and have 17 grandchildren between them.

"The arrest was made possible after a complaint by the woman's husband, who discovered the duo's indecent acts," the department's enforcement officer Mohamad Ikmal Tajul Ariffin was quoted as saying by the Malay-language Berita Harian daily.

Mohamad Ikmal said the elderly pair was believed to have started the affair several months ago and had also gone for several holidays together.

They will be charged in the Islamic sharia court and face hefty fines if found guilty, he said.

More than half of the Malaysian population are Muslims and state religious departments are given the right to carry out surprise raids to detain non-married Muslim couples caught in comprising positions.
