A study by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics looked at male and female workers by age groups that were not living in institutions.

The study found 17.7 percent of senior men in the workforce in 2000 but project this will grow to 20.8% by 2012. This is an increase of 3.1 percentage points, while the total percent of American males in the workforce is expected to decrease by 1.7 percentage points over the same period.

The percentage point gain for senior citizen men is larger than any other age group.

The number of women in the work, on the other hand, is projected to increase by 1.7 percentage points. The percentage of senior women working is expected to increase even more, by 2.7 percentage points. But, this gain in senior women working is dwarfed by the number of women between the ages of 55 and 64 who will be working – an 8.7 percentage point jump over 2000.
