American Becomes Oldest Living Person in the World for Second Time

August 29, 2006 – An American woman, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bolden, has become the oldest living woman and person in the world - for the second time. This time she was given the title as the result of the death on August 27 of Maria Esther Capovilla of Ecuador, who was found to be older than Bolden last December and given the recognition Bolden had held since last August.

The Ecuadorian woman died from pneumonia only days from her 117th birthday.

Guinness World Records, proclaimed Capovilla as the oldest living person on December 10, 2005, after reviewing details from her family including a birth and marriage certificate. She displaced Bolden, who was just 115, but had previously been recognized by Guinness.

Dec. 3, 2005 – The Yemen Observer reported last week on a man there that claims to be 130 years old. There is apparently no way to verify his age and Saeed Bin Saeed Al-Humri will most likely disappear among many others, particularly from countries that did little years ago to document births, who have claimed to be the oldest living person. Officially, no person has ever celebrated a 123rd birthday. Read more...

Guinness has not posted Bolden on their Website as the oldest living woman but the title is most certainly hers, again.

She is now shown as the oldest living person on the Gerontology Research Group Website, which maintains a list of verified supercentenarians - people at least 110 years old. They list the Tennessee woman as 116 years and 12 days old.

When she was first awarded the honor, Bolden's family in Memphis said she is "doing exceptionally well for a 115-year-old lady." They requested that, for her well-being, the public not seek her out, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

Maria Esther Capovilla of Ecuador, who died Aug. 27

Bolden, who lives in a Memphis nursing home,  was born Elizabeth Jones on Aug. 15, 1890 in Somerville, Tennessee. She already held the title as the oldest living American, which she was awarded by Guinness on June 23, 2005. She was 114 years 312 days old at the time.

“Her claim has been accepted without a marriage certificate due to the evidence we were able to gain from census reports and her seven children's documents. Having married Lewis Bolden about 1909, their first child Ezell was born 21 September 1909,” Guinness announced when she was named the oldest American.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports that Bolden has two living children, 40 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren, 150 great-great-grandchildren, 220 great-great-great grandchildren and 75 great-great-great-great grandchildren.

Right behind her on the GRG list is Emiliano Mercado del Toro of Puerto Rico, the oldest living man in the world, who GRG lists at 115 years and 6 days old.

This list represents about 10 percent of "the suspected real-world total" of persons 110 and older, according to GRG. The group estimates there are between 300 and 450 people 110 and older in the world and probably 60 to 75 in the U.S.

GRG also estimates that the bulk of supercentenarians are between the ages of 110 and 113 and note that "hardly any ever survive to live past 115."

On the current list, 14 of oldest supercenterarians listed are from the United States. Japan has seven. See list below.

The GNR also maintains lists of those who have died in the last two years.
