The reports on this unusual birth vary by source,
for example, most of the foreign press reports to mother to be 67 years
old, while most U.S. sources say she is 66. Then, too, some sources say
one of the twins had died in the womb, while other reports say the baby
girl died after birth. Even others say
she was initially carrying triplets
but lost the third fetus after nine to ten weeks.
Most agree the single retired university professor
did give birth to at least one daughter and both are doing fine.
Reuters, reporting from Bucharest, gave the
following information.
"We wanted to wait until the 34th week of
pregnancy, when the children's lungs would have reached full maturity,
but we noticed on Saturday that the heart of one of the little girls had
stopped beating," Doctor Bogdan Marinescu, chief of the Giulesti
maternity hospital in Bucharest, told a news conference.
"We decided to proceed with the operation to save
the second girl," Marinescu added.
Marinescu said both the mother and the child, who
weighs 3.1 lb. and is named Eliza-Maria, were in stable condition but
the little girl would have to spend up to six weeks in hospital to reach
two kg in weight.
Iliescu, who will be 67 in May, according to Reutrs,
became pregnant via in vitro fertilization and doctors said this was her
third attempt at carrying a pregnancy to term.
He said the eggs and sperm used had come from
"healthy young people".
"From a biological point of view, Ms Iliescu proved
that she can carry a pregnancy to the end," Marinescu said. "We managed
to solve a case which made us all very nervous."
Guinness World Records lists two 63-year-old women who gave birth:
Italian Rosanna Della Corte in 1994 and Californian Arceli Keh in 1996.
Media reports have also placed Della Corte at 62 when she gave birth.
Other news outlets have reported that a 65-year-old Indian schoolteacher
gave birth to a boy two years ago.
