Senate Republicans with McCain Decide to Approve Adding Senior
Citizens to Stimulus Plan
Additions to House bill adds 20 million seniors,
250,000 disabled veterans into those to get checks
Feb. 7, 2008 Democrats overcame the attempt by
Republicans in the Senate to block senior citizens from receiving checks
as part of the economic stimulus plan with help from Sen. John McCain,
who did not vote yesterday when the plan was defeated by one vote.
Senators Clinton and Obama voted for the plan yesterday but did not vote
today as the Senate elements were added to the House play by a vote of
81 to 16.
These changes are a victory for the 20 million
seniors and for the 250,000 disabled veterans left out of the
House-passed package, declared Finance Chair Max Baucus (D-Mont.).
The package crafted primarily by Baucus was
approved by a bi-partisan vote in the finance committee.
As approved today it provides one-time rebates of
up to $600 for individuals or $1,200 for couples plus $300 per child.
Low income people, including retirees on Social Security and disabled
veterans who pay no income taxes, would receive checks of $300.
The checks could be in the mail within months.
These changes are a victory for all Senators on
both sides of the aisle who stood up to say this rebate should go to the
folks who will stimulate our economy the fastest, said Baucus.
"When we began this process there was enormous
opposition to making even good, bipartisan changes to the House-passed
package. I am proud that the Finance Committee and the Senate
successfully improved this bill for seniors, disabled veterans, and the
people of this country who really need it, and I am proud to have done
it just as quickly as we said we would.
The Finance plan also included safeguards missing
from the House bill to ensure that illegal immigrants could not receive
rebates. The bill now goes back to the House for final approval.
