Democrat Daschle, formerly a South Dakota
representative in the House and Senate, was one of the earliest national
leaders to urge Barack Obama to run for the presidency. Daschle was the
Senate Majority Leader before his re-election defeat in 2004. He now
heads the health care policy group for the Obama transition team.
Ron Pollack, Executive Director of Families USA,
said, The appointment of Senator Daschle as Secretary of the Health and
Human Services Department is the best news possible for those who want
to achieve meaningful health care reform.
Senator Daschle has a deep commitment to securing
high-quality, affordable health care for everyone in our nation. His new
leadership position confirms that the incoming Obama Administration has
made health care reform a top and early priority for action in 2009.
CNN is reporting that Daschle negotiated that he
will also serve as the White House health "czar," or point person, so
that he will report directly to the incoming president.
By wearing two hats, Daschle -- not White House
staffers -- will be writing the health care plan that Obama submits to
Congress next year. (More
