Spirits High at Irish Nursing Home that Provides a
Pub
Nov. 17, 2005 An Irish hospital may have moved a
big step forward in reducing the dread many senior citizens have about
moving into a nursing home. St. Marys Hospital in County Monaghan
provides a bar for its elderly patients and their guests. It helps
attract more visitors for the residents, too.

In Ireland, says Rose Mooney, the assistant
director of nursing, social life revolves around the pub. She said the
pub at St Mary's, which is near the border with Northern Ireland, is all
about the health of their patients, who have an average age of 85. She
said health is about more than just ones physical condition.
She thinks it helps these Irishmen actually live
longer.
"We would say the whole social aspect of life does
extend the years - it means the patients aren't bored to death," Mooney,
told Reuters.
The pub is open at 11 am and closes at 9 pm and
charges normal bar prices.
Having its own bar made the hospital, which has
around 140 patients, unique in Ireland, she added.
The story was first reported by ABC News in
Australia and has received considerable world-wide attention.
In an editorial, the San Antonia Express-News said,
The pub has also redefined the term happy hour. When a pint beckons
just a few yards away, every hour is sublime.
For about 140 patients in Ireland, the golden
years have become a little more golden.
