Plant-Based Diet with Stress Reduction Slows
Progression of Prostate Cancer

vegetables, beans, and fruit;, less meat, dairy, and refined
carbohydrates
August 15, 2006 -Statistics say that one out of six
American men – primarily senior citizens, with the average age of
diagnosis being 70 - will develop prostate cancer. More than a third of
them will experience a recurrence after undergoing treatment, putting
them at high risk to die of the disease. A small study has found,
however, that diet changes, reinforced by stress management training,
appeared to be effective in slowing or halting the spread of this deadly
cancer.

The study, by Dr. Gordon A. Saxe and colleagues at
the Moores Cancer Center and School of Medicine at the University of
California, San Diego, is published in the September issue of SAGE
publication's Integrative Cancer Therapies.
The study focused on the change in the levels of
prostate-specific antigen (PSA), an indicator of the cancer, in response
to a plant-based diet and stress reduction. Patients were taught to
increase consumption of plant-based foods such as whole grains,
cruciferous and leafy green vegetables, beans and legumes, and fruit,
and to decrease the intake of meat, dairy products, and refined
carbohydrates.
They were also provided with stress management
training, which incorporated meditation, yoga and Tai Chi exercises. The
plant-based diet and stress reduction were effective in significantly
reducing the PSA rate, indicating a reduction in the rate of progression
of the prostate cancer.

Broccoli and Curry May Save American Men from
Prostate Cancer
Jan. 15, 2006 – The most common cancer in American
men – prostate cancer – may be prevented and possibly treated by
something as easy as eating certain vegetables, like broccoli and the
curry spice turmeric, says a new study. Age is considered the most important risk factor
for prostate cancer, since the average age of diagnosis is 70. But,
evidence is mounting that a diet high in fats and red meat play a
significant role in increasing this risk. American men, heavy consumers
of red meat, have the highest rates of prostate cancer in the world.
In the next 24 hours, prostate cancer will
claim the lives of 83 American men, according to the National Prostate
Cancer Coalition.

Four of 10 patients experienced an absolute
reduction in their PSA levels, suggesting the possibility of at least
some degree of disease remission. Nine of 10 had a reduction in their
rates of PSA rise and an improvement of their PSA doubling times,
suggesting a consistent slowing of the progression of disease, the
authors report.
"The magnitude of effect of these findings is the
strongest observed to date among dietary and nutritional interventions
in this patient population," states Dr. Saxe, assistant professor of
Family and Preventive Medicine.
"These results provide preliminary evidence that
adoption of a plant-based diet, in combination with stress reduction,
may attenuate disease progression and have therapeutic potential for
management of recurrent prostate cancer."
