Help Seniors Save on Taxes is Goal of Free Help from Senate Aging
Committee
March 16, 2004 - Protecting Older Americans
Against Overpayment of Income Taxes, is a document available online or
mail from the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging.
My goal in providing this years tax information is to help seniors
save as much as they can, said Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho), the
chairman.
Craig noted that when the 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was
passed in 1913, which authorized the personal income tax, the tax code
then was only 14 pages long and the instructions took only two pages.
Today the tax code is over 17,000 pages long, with an additional 16,000
pages published on forms and instructions. Im hopeful the information
we provide will help seniors cut through that incredible maze and again,
save seniors as much money as possible, Craig said.
This years publication includes a checklist for itemized deductions,
such as medical and dental expenses, a standard deduction table and
additional information, such as how to ask the Internal Revenue Service
for help. It is available free of charge by contacting the committee,
which you can do by calling 202-224-5364 or writing to:
