Senate Aging Committee

New Medicare Data to be Presented Thursday at Senate Committee

Former Sen. Glenn, Jack Valenti Testified Today on Older Workers

Sept. 20, 2004 – At the hearing of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging today on rules for older workers, Chairman Larry Craig (R-Idaho) announced a special hearing on Thursday to hear updates on the Medicare drug discount card program.

Sen. Breaux Honored

Chairman Larry Craig (R-Idaho) presented ranking member John Breaux (D-Louisiana) with a honorary gavel. Breaux chaired the committee from June 2001 until the end of 2002, and is retiring at the end of this year after 32 years in Congress.

“Since you are chairing your last Aging hearing today, it is only appropriate that you have your own gavel,” Craig said. “It is presented with our utmost respect, affection, and loyalty in recognition of your valuable leadership and service on this committee. May it serve you well and be used in fond remembrance of all the good work you have done on this committee on behalf of our nations’ senior citizens.”

The forum, titled, “Medicare Drug Discount Cards: Measuring the Savings,” will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 23, and will be held in room 628 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.

Medicare Administrator Dr. Mark McClellan will join Senator Craig in introducing the discussion at which participants will spotlight Medicare drug discount card analyses conducted by the Lewin Group, the American Enterprise Institute, the Kaiser Family Foundation, and by Medicare itself. Dr. McClellan will also present new data his agency has collected about the Medicare-approved drug discount program’s progress. A moderator- facilitated discussion will follow.

Senators and Administrator McClellan are not scheduled to participate in the panel discussion. The event will be moderated by James Firman, president and CEO of the National Council on the Aging (NCOA).

The forum will be webcast under the “Hearings” section of the Aging Committee’s

website and available for viewing later at http://aging.senate.gov. Prepared witness testimony will be available on that website once the hearing begins.

Panelists
* Sharman Stevens, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Washington, DC
* Julie James, Health Policy Alternatives and author of the Kaiser Family Foundation study, Washington, DC
* Mary Grealy, Healthcare Leadership Council, which sponsored the Lewin study, Washington, DC
* Robert Helms, American Enterprise Institute, Washington, DC

Today’s hearing, "Breaking the Silver Ceiling: A New Generation of Older Americans Redefining the New Rules of the Workplace,” is one called for and chaired by Sen. John Breaux (D-Louisiana), ranking member, and is a follow-up to a hearing Craig held last week that examined federal mandatory retirement rules.

At the hearing former U.S. Senator John Glenn, who served on the Aging Committee, and Jack Valenti, the former head of Motion Picture of America Association, presented testimony and answered questions.
