No Colonoscopy

New Colon Cancer Screening Becomes More Widely Available

Sept. 10, 2003 - More than half of all Americans at risk for colon cancer have not been screened even though it is the number two cancer killer in America. Why? Many patients are reluctant to undergo testing due to the anticipated discomfort, inconvenience and perceived insensitivity of a colonoscopy.

But now there is an “excellent patient-friendly option for people unwilling to undergo a colonoscopy,” according to Exact Sciences, the makers of PreGen-Plus. They announced today that their “safe and non-invasive” DNA-based stool test will now be widely available through the LabCorp testing centers across the country.

PreGen-Plus is an effective, easy-to-use and completely non-invasive screening option for the more than 80 million Americans who should be screened for colorectal cancer.

PreGen-Plus is “safe, simple and non-invasive,” say the makers:

  • Requires only a single stool specimen

  • No bowel preparation

  • No sample manipulation

  • No medication or dietary restrictions

How serious is colorectal cancer?

• Colorectal cancer is the most deadly cancer among non-smoking men and women in the U.S. and the second most deadly cancer overall.

• Approximately 148,000 cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed each year, and there are approximately 57,000 deaths from the disease annually.

• Early diagnosis results in a greater than 90% five-year survival rate; unfortunately, more than two-thirds of colorectal cancer cases are caught at a later stage, when the survival rate is less than 50 percent.

• A recent study by the Partnership for Prevention showed that fewer than half of the population aged 50 and older receives any type of screening.

• Approximately one-third of colon cancer-related deaths could be avoided if more people underwent regular screening.
