You're
never
too
old
to
be
a
"Red
Hot
Mama!"
Starting
this
month,
women
over
65
are
coming
together
in
local
communities
across
the
country
to
take
control
and
arrest
bone
loss,
through
a
program
called
"Arrest
Bone
Loss-It's
Never
Too
Late
To
Take
Action."
The
effort
is
designed
to
encourage
women
to
become
deputies
of
their
own
health
and
protect
bone
loss.
Prime
Plus/Red
Hot
Mamas®,
the
nation's
largest
menopause
education
and
support
group
and
Berlex
Laboratories,
Inc.,
the
makers
of
Climara
(estradiol
transdermal
system),
the
nation's
number
one
prescribed
estrogen
patch,
have
teamed
up
to
promote
healthy
bones
in
women
65
years
and
older.
Through
education
on
bone
loss,
post-menopausal
health,
lifestyle
modifications
and
the
role
that
estrogen
replacement
can
play
in
preserving
bone
density,
the
goal
is
to
empower
women
with
the
knowledge
to
take
action
against
the
bone-thinning
disease
called
osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis
affects
28
million
Americans,
80
percent
of
whom
are
women.
Due
to
the
dramatic
drop
in
drop
in
estrogen
production,
women
who
have
undergone
natural
or
surgical
menopause
are
especially
at
risk
for
losing
up
to
20
percent
of
their
bone
mass
within
the
first
five
to
seven
years
following
menopause.
Estrogens
should
not
be
used
by
patients
with
known
or
suspected
pregnancy,
breast
cancer,
estrogen-dependant
neoplasia,
undiagnosed
abnormal
genital
bleeding,
active
thrombophlebitis,
or
thromboembolic
disorders.
Estrogens
have
been
reported
to
increase
the
risk
of
endometrial
carcinoma.
