Aug. 24, 2005 - Evans Townsend, Jr., 90-year-old
advertising account executive of Wadmalaw Island, has been named as
South Carolinas outstanding older worker. He will be among the honorees at the Experience Works Prime Time Awards Program in
Washington, D.C., when the national winner is named during the September
26 to 29 gathering.
Experience Works, bolstered by grants from the
federal government, is the nation's largest provider of training and
employment services for older workers. It also annually recognizes
outstanding older workers from all 50 states, the District of Columbia
and Puerto Rico.
Now in its eighth year, the Prime Time Awards
Program says the non-profit organization seeks to remove barriers to
employment and lessen negative stereotypes about older workers.
Townsend, the South Carolina nominee, has worked in
advertising since 1955. His first job was a chief accountant for
Southern Ice Company in 1936. He has been an active member of many civic
clubs and organizations and has exhibited the characteristics of a
professional, loyal and dedicated employee and an outstanding member of
the community.
"You must like your vocation," says Townsend. "Work
diligently, never criticize your competitor. You must be trustworthy."
"As our population continues to age, it is becoming
more important than ever that businesses look to older workers to fill
critical jobs," said Billy Wooten, regional director of Experience
Works. "Our Prime Time Awards Program showcases the talents of our
nation's seniors and helps us demonstrate that ability is truly
ageless."
In addition to special activities and recognition
within the state, the honoree will attend the Washington, D.C. event
this September, which will include meetings with congressional
representatives, congressional events, and the awards banquet.
The ceremony will be at the Ronald Reagan Building.
In addition, America's Oldest Worker will be announced at a press
conference on September 27th in Washington, D.C.
Experience Works is a national, nonprofit
organization that provides training and employment services for mature
workers. The organization reaches more than 125,000 mature individuals
in all 50 states and Puerto Rico each year.
