Aug. 16, 2011 – “It was a long time ago…” That’s a phrase familiar to every senior citizen, and I am
talking about a long time ago. That’s when I had the privilege of being the publisher of the San Angelo (Tx) Standard-Times and the honor of
working with some mighty fine Texans. Now, one of the best, Jenny Sakellariou, 84, has been nominated as the Meals on Wheels volunteer of the
year and I hope you will vote for her.
Jenny, a steady and dedicated worker at the newspaper, always had a caring attitude. She was the go to
gal for anyone in need of a little advice, counseling or just a friendly ear.

“Jenny Sakellariou is a brilliant and strong personality who brightens the day of clients, volunteers, and staff alike
here at Meals For The Elderly,” wrote Becca Lambert, who wisely nominated Jenny.
“A first generation Greek immigrant, Jenny has a charming wit and a resilient spirit. She works hard and forgets her age
(84) as she fills in the gaps and takes care of anything she finds to do at Meals For The Elderly.
“Jenny also volunteers for another program caring for the homebound, Faith In Action, where she takes anyone who asks to
a doctor’s appointments with her own car and gas. This is in addition to her work her at MFTE and at her church.
“Because of her 10 years of service, coupled with the sheer number of jobs she does (delivery, finding substitute
drivers, helping drivers get their meals, breakfast prep, office help, cleaning the office, greeting visitors, and ensuring donated newspapers
make it to clients) Jenny was an obvious choice for the 2011 American Volunteer; of course, Jenny would never admit that.”
The winner of the American Volunteer Contest will win the Meals on Wheels Association of America’s (MOWAA) annual Jody
Tepedino Nicholo Award and his or her nominating MOW program will be presented with a check for $1,000 at the
MOWAA Conference in Chicago. Second place will be presented with a check for $750
and third place will be presented with a check for $500.
Anyone who registers on the Contest Site can vote for their favorite Entry or the Entry that best meets the judging
criteria during the Voting Period.
