Most Americans Want to Live by Beach but Senior Citizens Seem to Want it Most

Older folks pick Oregon as number five state to live in, others pick Colorado in Harris Poll

Sept. 14, 2007 - Easy access to a beach seems to be a key factor in deciding which state people would choose to live in if they moved. Senior citizens, at least those 62 and older, agree with younger adults on this but add a twist – they are a little more adamant about being near the beach and possibly want it cooler and more peaceful.

According to a new Harris Poll of U.S. adults, California remains number 1 this year, followed by Florida, which moved up from number three and Hawaii, which has dropped from number two. Florida has been in the top three ever since this question was first asked in 1997.

Fourth in the ranking was North Carolina and fifth was Colorado, which moved up from seventh in last year’s poll..

The “Matures” in Harris terminology followed right down the line with the younger adults – California, Florida, Hawaii and North Carolina – down to number five, where they voted for Oregon.

Choosing Oregon over Colorado certainly indicates the old folks have a stronger desire to be by the beach. Maybe, too, the seniors see Oregon as a little cooler and quieter than Colorado, which attracts lots of young skiers and outdoorsmen.

Age play seemed to play a small role in the state people would choose to live in for other age groups, too. The top choice for Baby Boomers (those aged 43-61) would be Hawaii, while California is tops for the other generations. For Echo Boomers (those aged 18-30), Texas moves up and is their number 2 choice. Generation Xers (those aged 31-42) and Gen Xers picked Pennsylvania in the number 5.

When it comes to which city people would live in, New York City comes in as number one for the ninth time (out of the last 10 opportunities), San Diego, CA moves up one spot to second and Seattle, WA also moves up one place to be the third most popular city. Harris did not show the choices by age group.

These are some of the results of The Harris Pollฎ, a nationwide survey of 2,694 adults conducted online between August 7 and 13, 2007 by Harris Interactiveฎ.
