National Center on Elder Abuse Enhances Website to Better Help Seniors, Caregivers

The NCEA disseminates information to professionals and the public, provides assistance and training to states and community-based organizations

Link to Help Hotline PageAug. 8, 2008 - The National Center on Elder Abuse, which serves as a national resource center dedicated to the prevention of elder mistreatment, has recently remodeled its Website. The changes provide senior citizens and caregivers easy access to a wealth of helpful information.

First established by the U.S. Administration on Aging (AoA) in 1988 as a national elder abuse resource center, the NCEA was granted a permanent home at AoA in the 1992 amendments made to Title II of the Older Americans Act.

The NCEA disseminates elder abuse information to professionals and the public, and provides technical assistance and training to states and to community-based organizations.

The NCEA makes news and resources available on-line and an easy-to-use format; collaborates on research; provides training; identifies and provides information about promising practices and interventions; operates a listserve forum for professionals; and provides subject matter expertise on program and policy development.

Just one phone call or Website visit provides an instant connection to resources that enable older persons to live independently in their communities. The service links those who need assistance with state and local area agencies on aging and community-based organizations that serve older adults and their caregivers.

● Links to Elder Abuse Hotlines in the 50 States

● Links to lists of resources in each of the states on elder abuse prevention, including State government agencies, state laws, state-specific data and statistics, statewide resources.

● Links to many publications and sources of helpful information, including laws, events and Webcasts

● Links to many community outreach organizations helping the elderly

● Helpful information nursing home abuse

● Complete coverage on Adult Protective Services through several pages of links

● Many helpful links for caregivers.

Since its inception, the NCEA says it has operated as a unique, multi-disciplinary consortium of equal partners with expertise in elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

Now and into the future, the NCEA says on its Website, it will continue to tailor its activities to meet the special needs of disadvantaged populations, including limited-English speakers and other underrepresented groups such as Native Americans.

The Centers says it will incorporate the latest technology to generate and disseminate knowledge that can build and strengthen elder rights networks and enhance the effectiveness of state and community-based elder abuse prevention and intervention programs.

The NCEA says it will also serve as a national clearinghouse of information for elder rights advocates, law enforcement, legal professionals, public policy leaders, researchers, and others working to ensure that all older Americans will live with dignity, integrity, independence, and without abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

The National Center on Elder Abuse is a program of the U.S. Administration on Aging.
