Texas Suspect Arrested in Unexplained Murders of
Three Elderly Women
April 22, 2005 – A man was arrested today in Port
Arthur, Texas, for the unexplained murders of three women, all in their
80’s, this week and the attack of another 59-year-old woman who
successfully fought off the attack.
A Port Arthur man who is in custody charged with
the Thursday home invasion of Brenda Choate has been named as a suspect
in the capital murder deaths of the three elderly women this week.
In a press conference today, police named
40-year-old Gary Sinegal as the suspect. Sinegal is in police custody
charged with burglary of a habitation and a parole violation after
Choate identified him in police line-up early today morning.
The police department is reviewing numerous home
invasions occurring since Sinegal's release on parole from prison last
November to see if there are any similarities in the cases. Police are
also processing evidence at the homes of the three elderly woman whose
bodies were found in their closets with evidence that they had been
beaten.
Louise Tamplin, 81, was found dead in her home
Thursday afternoon when one of her relatives became concerned of her
whereabouts and asked one of her church members to check on her welfare.
The church member found her dead inside the home inside her closet.
About an hour earlier, an air conditioner repairman
found the body of 86-year-old Margie Gafford in her closet.
On Monday, Dorothy Barrett, 82, was also found dead
in her closet.
In all three of the murders, witnesses said they
had seen a black man riding a bluish bicycle with a baby carrier on the
back. It was that description that led police to Sinegal after someone
said they knew of a man who fit that description and were able to
provide a name and tell investigators where the man lived.
Police have speculated that robbery did not appear
to be the motive.
Port Arthur is located about 90 miles east of
Houston.
