Wichita Police Looking for Woman Who Scammed Elderly Man

Dec. 14 – Police in Wichita, Kansas, are looking for a Good Samaritan and a woman they suspect took $7,340 in cash from an 81-year-old man in a scam that began around Dec. 6, according to a report in the Wichita Eagle.

The Good Samaritan found the elderly man wandering around and took him to the 2300 block of North Somerset, where the man said he lived. Apparently, the man was confused about an old address and actually lives in the 2000 block of North Porter. That person might have seen or heard something that could lead police to the woman who apparently stole from the man, but the Good Samaritan has disappeared, too.

It appears the senior man has lost some short-term memory. The concerned resident found the gray-haired man in the cold Saturday, wandering around 21st and Amidon.

At the man's home, police found no food, and from conditions inside they could tell he "probably was not taking care of himself very well," Wichita police Detective Brad Bryant, who specializes in financial crimes, told reporter Tim Potter.

In addition to the person who helped the man, police want to talk to anyone who saw a woman around his home or taking him to the Intrust Bank on the southwest corner of 21st and Amidon. She has been described as probably under 30, with light skin. She could be Hispanic. She may go by "Liz." She may drive a white foreign car.

Police are asking anyone with information that might lead to the suspect or the concerned citizen to call detectives at 316-268-4172 or 316-268-4193.

Such a case "probably happens more than we realize," Bryant told Potter.

"We have traveling teams of con men who come through... on a regular basis." He estimates at least one such group hits the city each week.

"A lot of the victims don't know they've been scammed until after the fact," he said.

Lack of reporting compounds the problem. Police estimate that, at most, only one in 10 scams against the elderly gets reported.
