Wrinkle Reduction Reported in Clinical Study

May 14, 2001--Advanced Tissue Sciences, Inc.,  reported a reduction in facial wrinkles in studies of patients treated with a topical solution containing growth factors derived from the company's human tissue-engineered skin.

The results of two studies were described at the Society of Investigative Dermatology meeting in Washington, DC on May 12, 2001. The data suggest that such enriched solutions may be beneficial in the remodeling and regeneration of skin, thereby reducing the appearance of visible wrinkles.

In the first study, 14 patients with moderately wrinkled skin used a daily application of NouriCel(TM), an enriched nutrient solution containing human growth factors derived from Advanced Tissue Sciences' tissue-engineered skin. Nine of 14 patients (64%) had visible improvements in at least one of four areas with an average decrease in wrinkle depth of approximately 27% after treatment for 60 days.

An additional study of 16 volunteers analyzed biopsies of treated areas taken at the conclusion of a 30-day NouriCel trial. Results showed a 50-80% increase in Grenz zone collagen (upper dermal collagen) in two of the three formulations designed to optimize growth factor penetration. Computerized measurement of tissue density and texture showed a 42-53% increase in newly deposited fine matrix fibers. These results are consistent with in vitro studies which showed a statistically significant increase in fibroblast and keratinocyte proliferation, collagen deposition, and antioxidant activity after application of NouriCel.

``NouriCel is part of our effort to pursue more near-term opportunities such as the large cosmeceuticals market for products to treat aging skin,'' said Gail Naughton, Ph.D., President of Advanced Tissue Sciences. NouriCel is being evaluated as an additive in cosmetics including skin, hair, and nail products to potentially enhance aesthetic outcomes.

NouriCel is derived from the nutrient solutions used to nourish three-dimensional human tissues in the manufacturing process developed by Advanced Tissue Sciences for its line of human tissue-engineered products. As tissues are grown, the nutrient solution collects soluble growth factors, collagens, and antioxidants produced by neonatal cells. The result is an enriched nutrient solution containing the complex array of factors found in newborn skin but present in lower amounts as skin matures or cells are damaged by chemicals and sunlight (resulting in wrinkles, sagging, and pigmentation changes).

Advanced Tissue Sciences is a tissue engineering company utilizing its proprietary core technology to develop and manufacture human-based tissue products for tissue repair and transplantation.
