Submissions Sought On Learning Among Older Adults
New journal to be published by Osher Lifelong
Learning Institute
July 28, 2005 Reports on original research and
thoughtful and engaging commentary related to learning among older
adults is being sought by a new academic journal - The LLI Review, The
Annual Journal of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes.
The National Resource Center for the Osher Lifelong
Learning Institutes says The LLI Review is set for publication in late
spring, 2006. The deadline for submissions is November 30th.
E. Michael Brady, Ph.D., Professor and Senior
Research Fellow at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the
University of Southern Maine will serve as the journal's editor.
To accomplish its goal The Review will publish work
by members of the OLLI national network as well as by gerontologists and
educators working and conducting research in the field of older adult
education.
In announcing the journal, Brady notes, "With more
than 500 Lifelong Learning Institutes (LLIs) across the country,
including 73 designated as Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes, the LLI
movement is so strong that we need a forum to share research, best
practices, and other key ideas within the network."
"Many existing research journals consist of
professional gerontologists or specialists in aging speaking to each
other about older learners," he continued, "they do not have a practical
or applied focus." The LLI Review will publish empirical research and
best practices in teaching and curriculum design, and will also include
the voices of older learners sharing insights and experiences about
their participation in lifelong learning institutes through an eclectic
mix of memoir writing, brief fiction, and poetry. Portions of The LLI
Review will be available online and a print version of the journal will
be sent to all LLIs, OLLIs and libraries across the United States and
Universities of the Third Age internationally.
Kali Lightfoot, Executive Director of the National
Resource Center, notes "The LLI Journal marks an exciting milestone for
our national network of OLLIs-we're making an important contribution to
the body of research and literature about and by older learners,
particularly in Lifelong Learning Institutes."
The University of Southern Maine serves as the
National Resource Center of the national network of Osher Lifelong
Learning Institutes designated and funded by The Bernard Osher
Foundation of San Francisco. The network of OLLIs, currently number 73,
and is expected to expand to 100.
