Senior Winter Games

Most Senior Athletes Compete for Health Reasons

March 2000 - Although they will compete for the gold in the Senior Winter Games, most senior athletes admit that winning isn't everything, proven through the "Pfizer Pulse Survey," a study of 3,000 senior athletes who competed in the 1999 Summer National Senior Games.

The survey reveals that most senior athletes compete for their health and personal pride -- not to win.  In fact, more than half of those surveyed consider themselves to be in much better health than other people their age, and 71 percent agree that their sport helps keep them healthy.

"Exercise is important to maintain good cardiovascular health," says Dr. Mike Magee, Senior Medical Advisor at Pfizer Inc, a Hall of Fame Sponsor of the 2000 Winter National Senior Games.  "Winning for these athletes is more about leading a healthy lifestyle than it is about winning the gold.  These senior athletes are 'health heroes' who can teach us all a great deal about healthy aging."

Pfizer Inc is a research-based global pharmaceutical company that discovers, develops, manufactures and markets innovative medicines for humans and animals.  The company reported revenues of more $16 billion in 1999 and expects to spend about $3.2 billion on research and development this year.
