LAKE PLACID, N.Y. Weather conditions may have been warm, but the Parkway course at Whiteface Mountain held up well Wednesday for the giant slalom competition at the 2000 Winter National Senior Games.
Wednesdays races were contested by 29 novice and intermediate skiers.
Johnnye Valien of Los Angeles, Calif. needed 1 minute, 40.45 seconds for her two runs to capture the gold medal in the womens 70-74 classification. Valien outdistanced Betsy Sayre of Harrisonburg, Va. for the gold medal. Sayres silver medal winning time was 4:32.60.
Jean Vanderzee of Adirondack, N.Y., the lone entrant in womens 65-69 division, was awarded gold in 1:23.05.
Judith McGreevy of Dillon, Colo. took gold among women 60-64 years of age with a clocking of 1:23.82 for her two heats. Lee Hagenstad of Sherwood Forest, Md. claimed silver in 2:31.94.
The 55-59 age group saw Joan Henry of Rexford, N.Y. ski to gold in 1:16.97. Judith Armstrong of Wilmington, Del. was right behind in 1:20.34. Colleen Pierre of Baltimore, Md. finished with a bronze medal in 1:27.25.
The 50-54 age range had Sharyl Whitehead of Topeka, Kan. first in 1:33.38. Dorothy Ray of Bricktown, N.J. was next in 5:21.86.
William Harrison of Bel Air, Md. lead the 50-54 mens group in 1:20.76. Robert Whitehead of Topeka, Kan. wound up with silver in 1:23.18, while Guy Hayward of Saranac Lake, N.Y. settled for the bronze with a clocking of 1:28.49.
Milan Martinec of Houston, Tx. picked up the gold in the 55-59 bracket with a time of 1:27.76.
Theodore Fendick of Binghamton, N.Y. grabbed a gold medal ahead of Harold Waggoner of Cloudcroft, N.M. Fendick clocked 1:08.38 to Waggoners 1:12.19. David Fite, Hollig, N.H. raced to the bronze in 1:16.84.
George Hamilton of Greenville, N.C. was the winner in the 65-69 age division in 1:17.10. Rudy Albrecht of Mountain View, Calif. picked up the silver in 1:21.06, while Eugene Lee of Manassas, Va. achieved a bronze medal in 1:22.66.
The only skier in the 70-74 age competition, H. Dean Nordquist of Glens Falls, N.Y., gained a gold medal in 1:43.63.
The more advanced skiers return to Whiteface Mountain Thursday morning for the running of the Senior Olympics slalom competition.
