More alpine skiing at mid-point of Senior Olympics

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Weather conditions may have been warm, but the Parkway course at Whiteface Mountain held up well Wednesday for the giant slalom competition at the 2000 Winter National Senior Games.

Wednesday’s races were contested by 29 novice and intermediate skiers.

Johnnye Valien of Los Angeles, Calif. needed 1 minute, 40.45 seconds for her two runs to capture the gold medal in the women’s 70-74 classification. Valien outdistanced Betsy Sayre of Harrisonburg, Va. for the gold medal. Sayre’s silver medal winning time was 4:32.60.

Jean Vanderzee of Adirondack, N.Y., the lone entrant in women’s 65-69 division, was awarded gold in 1:23.05.

Judith McGreevy of Dillon, Colo. took gold among women 60-64 years of age with a clocking of 1:23.82 for her two heats. Lee Hagenstad of Sherwood Forest, Md. claimed silver in 2:31.94.

The 55-59 age group saw Joan Henry of Rexford, N.Y. ski to gold in 1:16.97. Judith Armstrong of Wilmington, Del. was right behind in 1:20.34. Colleen Pierre of Baltimore, Md. finished with a bronze medal in 1:27.25.

The 50-54 age range had Sharyl Whitehead of Topeka, Kan. first in 1:33.38. Dorothy Ray of Bricktown, N.J. was next in 5:21.86.

William Harrison of Bel Air, Md. lead the 50-54 men’s group in 1:20.76. Robert Whitehead of Topeka, Kan. wound up with silver in 1:23.18, while Guy Hayward of Saranac Lake, N.Y. settled for the bronze with a clocking of 1:28.49.

Milan Martinec of Houston, Tx. picked up the gold in the 55-59 bracket with a time of 1:27.76.

Theodore Fendick of Binghamton, N.Y. grabbed a gold medal ahead of Harold Waggoner of Cloudcroft, N.M. Fendick clocked 1:08.38 to Waggoner’s 1:12.19. David Fite, Hollig, N.H. raced to the bronze in 1:16.84.

George Hamilton of Greenville, N.C. was the winner in the 65-69 age division in 1:17.10. Rudy Albrecht of Mountain View, Calif. picked up the silver in 1:21.06, while Eugene Lee of Manassas, Va. achieved a bronze medal in 1:22.66.

The only skier in the 70-74 age competition, H. Dean Nordquist of Glens Falls, N.Y., gained a gold medal in 1:43.63.

The more advanced skiers return to Whiteface Mountain Thursday morning for the running of the Senior Olympics slalom competition.

Three Gold Medal Winners in Women's 10K Classical Cross-Country Competition

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Veronica Brelsford of Marlboro, Vt., and Gail Ferat of Parish, and Rosemary Poetzel from Wauwatosa, Wis., each picked up a gold medal in the women’s 10-kilometer classical cross-country race at the MacKenzie-Intervale ski jump complex during the inaugural Winter National Senior Games. Brelsford posted the fastest time, covering the course in 1:01:03.0 to earn her second gold medal in the 60-64 age group. Ferat also picked up her second gold medal of the games in the 55-59 division by finishing the course in 1:03:42.8

Poetzel, competing in the 50-54 age group, had a time of 2:10:02.5 to win the gold in her division.

John Pelton, Chary Griffin Win 200-meter Snowshoe Race

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – John Pelton, from West Rupert, Vt., and Chary Griffin of Cazenovia, each won their second gold medal of the Winter National Senior Games – The Senior Olympics, by winning the 200-meter showshoe race held at the MacKenzie-Intervale ski jump complex.

Pelton posted the fastest time of the day, covering the course in a blistering 43.68, and won the gold for the 60-64 age group. Howard Jennings, from Cadyville, won the 50-54 age group with a time of 43.89 for his second snowshoeing gold while Samuel Biondo of Gaithersburg, Md., picked up the gold in the 55-59 group.

Donald Kjelleren of Wilmington, Del., had a time of 50.27 to win his second gold medal in the 65-69 division. Dick Graves, from Traverse City, Mich., captured the title for the 70-74 age group with a time of 52.24 while Bill Osburn of Bethesda, Md., won the 75-79 group with a time of 1:05.13. It was the second snowshoeing gold medal for both competitors.

For the women, Griffin won the 50-54 group with a time of 57.47 to earn her second snowshoeing gold medal. Johnnye Valien of Los Angeles, Calif., posted a time of 1:11.68 to her second gold medal in the 70-74 age group.
