a text of a SPEECH given in 2003 or 2004 (only) on issues of concern

collection published each year by the H. W. Wilson Co. since 1937.
Please see below names of persons whose speeches appear in most
recent volumes. The Wilson Co. publishes Readers Guide, Art Index,
and other library resources (see:

My mother is 79
years old. She has given some money to charity but apparently her
name is on some master list and she gets mountains of charity mail
every day and writes checks to everyone (money she doesn't have). Is
there any way to stop her from getting all this charity mail? It has
become a real problem. She has memory problems so she will write a
place several checks in one month because apparently that charity
sends her another request for money as soon as they get her check.
Please help.
Kim Haley
Editor: Kim,
I had a similar problem with my mother, just before she was
diagnosed with Alzheimer's. My solution was to have someone else
start picking up her mail and taking out the solicitations. Maybe
someone else will have a better idea.
I am an oxygen users

use the o2 bottles. I am in hopes you will visit my site and make
some suggestions as to how I might get this out to those who it
would benefit. I get all sorts of comments on the covers while
walking with my o2 bottle...they are great conversation starters and
just seem to put a smile on everyone's face..thanks in advance for
any help you might be able to offer.

Hello, for the flu shots, how old for a
senior citizen? Is it 50 yrs.& up?
R.Dale
Rdd000001@aol.com
Editor:
Persons 50+ Should Get Flu Shot Not FluMist, says National Center
for Infectious Diseases.
What is the live
attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) (trade name FluMistTM)?
LAIV is a new
influenza vaccine that was licensed in 2003. It is different from
the already licensed influenza vaccine (also called the "flu shot")
because LAIV contains weakened live influenza viruses instead of
killed viruses and is administered by nasal spray instead of
injection.
LAIV contains live
viruses, whereas the inactivated vaccine contains killed viruses.
LAIV is administered by nasal sprayer, while the inactivated vaccine
is administered by needle. LAIV is approved for use only among
healthy persons aged 5-49 years. Inactivated influenza vaccine is
approved for use among persons aged >6 months, including healthy
persons and those with chronic medical conditions.
Do I
Qualify for Reverse Mortgage?
I am 62, single, dob March 31, 1941. Will be
closing soon on new house
built on land I purchased in total.
Mortgage will be 167,000
Land is worth 70,000 to 90,000 I paid 70,000
Under new laws, do I qualify for reverse mortgage?
Am I required to wait a year?
It is my understanding I would have to use any loan I would qualify
for to
pay on my mortgage. Do I have to pay it off in full?
I would love to use my equity to reduce or have no mortgage
payments.
Please respond to this email address, "Yvonne Poole" <ypoole@mediview.net>

Editor:
Yvonne, you need to talk to your personal banker or CPA. Reverse
mortgage laws vary by state.
Volunteers
Write People in Nursing Homes
Hello! I run an organization called A
Friendly Word. We are a group of volunteers that write letters to
nursing home residents, to brighten their day. I have run this
group over the past 2 years, and it has really grown! I now have
over 500 pen pal matches, and it has grown too large for one person
to handle. I am hoping to find a group that might be able to take
over the pen pal program, instead of just ending it, because the
seniors really enjoy the letters. Does your organization know of
anyone that might be willing to help?

Medicare
Could you please find out if the new drug
Forteo ( Eli Lily) used for the treatment for osteoporosis is
covered by Medicare ?? Do you know of a website that might give me
an answer ?? I enjoyed your website very much. Thank You

We spent sometime searching around Medicare and could not find an
answer. The best bet is to ask your doctor.

Writes Book on Alcoholism
Dear Editor, At the ripe young age of 76 I decided to give up my
anonymity and write about my alcohol addiction. I have 6
grandchildren and I wanted them to be aware of the fact that they
are very susceptible to alcoholism due to the fact that it is
inherited. It was a very hard choice to make. My book is called,
The Road To Recovery-Judaism and
Alcoholism. The
publisher is Publish America and it can be ordered on Amazon or
Barnes & Noble. I hope this book will inspire other people who have
a similar problem to discuss it with their friends and family.

Editor:
Congratulations, Carol, on winning in the battle with alcohol
addiction and writing a book to help others. Hope this helps you
sell a few.
Concerned
About Shock Treatments Given Mom
I know that most of the people out there in RV's are
over 50. I am trying to get the word out about what is happening to
our seniors with Alzheimers and Dimentia. My mother was diagnosed
with Alzheimers earlier this year, early stages...she is 71. She
went into a nursing home, was there for 7 weeks and was resistant.
They sent her to a hospital for evaluation of her meds. They are now
giving her ETC (Shock Treatment). I have been trying to find out
info on it in association with Dementia and does it cause further
memory loss, what kind of studies have been done etc. I am finding
nothing except things that are appalling...more memory loss. Are
they doing this to our seniors to make them compliant? Please help
get the word out to our seniors....this is scary stuff. If you find
out anything please let me know.
Thanks so much!

You need to discuss this with medical professionals. If you are
concerned about your Moms treatment, you should get a second and,
possibly, a third opinion. Act now! I am also forwarding your email
to an attorney, Beth Janicek, that specializes in elder abuse - in
particular negligence and malpractice.
How to
Reach Seniors in Florida
Hi, I was looking to advertise in a senior magazine and
was just wondering if you reached seniors in Florida. If you didn't
would you happen to know any other magazines that did in the area?

We are an online publication, thus, we reach English speaking senior
citizens around the world. We do have many readers in Florida.
Almost every major city and certainly in Florida has a
publication for senior citizens.

Wants Our Guidelines
Would please send me your writer's
guidelines. I'm a travel writer. Also, I have a novel coming out
soon that would be of interest to your mature readers. Perhaps you'd
like to review it. Thanks.
Janet Go
Editor: We do not have any writer's
guidelines, because we cannot afford to pay for contributions. We do
welcome free submissions on topics of high interest to senior
citizens. Send them to
editor@seniorjournal.com. We are also looking for some
volunteers to help with this site.

I am trying to find a prescription card for my grandmother that will
help with the cost of her medicine costs. They ran an add on TV
about a prescription card, saying that is was a government issued
card. My mom gave me the number but I have no idea what the company
name is. Is it safe to call these places, does a government funded
prescription plan exist for senior citizens? If so, how to get in
contact with them? Thank you!!
Editor: Just today the Chairman of the
Senate Special Committee on Aging released a new list of drug
discount programs.
Read his release...
I am hoping you could answer a question for
me. I am a graduate student of urban planning who is currently
researching safety surfaces for use with senior populations.
I cannot find any information about paving or
flooring surfaces specifically designed to be safer and more shock
absorbing for seniors. Do such materials exist? If so, do you have
any idea where I can look for more information or clinical trial
results? (I have found plenty of recycled tire-playground surfaces,
but nothing about senior citizens).
Sophie Hartshorn
Editor: Interesting thought. Falls are
certainly a major problem for the elderly and your question is one
that needs some study. We will post your letter hoping someone has
some ideas.
Please consider posting news about my new
book aimed at those over 50.
