CDC Monitoring Health of Older Americans

But Gallup Survey says more Americans feel good mentally than physically

Nov. 28, 2001 -- Most Americans rate both their physical and mental health as excellent or good, while very few people rate either condition as poor. Senior citizens, however, give their conditions slightly lower ratings than do young people. Click 11/28/1*

Heart Attacks

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. CHD is caused by a narrowing of the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart, and often results in a heart attack.

Each year, about 1.1 million Americans suffer a heart attack. About 460,000 of those heart attacks are fatal. About half of those deaths occur within 1 hour of the start of symptoms and before the person reaches the hospital.

Advocacy Group for Age-Related Macular Degeneration - AMD - Offers Free Self-Test, Resources, Support Services

The Macular Degeneration Partnership is stepping up efforts to offer information through their Web site to educate the public in the prevention and treatment of AMD. The AREDS (Age-Related Eye Disease Study) used dietary supplements which included a combination of antioxidants and zinc, and involved almost 5,000 people over age 55. Survey Shows Few Older Americans Know about Peripheral Arterial Disease - PAD

The disease is characterized by blockage of the arteries in the legs and sometimes the arms due to plaque formation. The most common symptom is unrelenting leg pain during moderate exercise, including muscle cramping, tightness, and/or fatigue, that may go away after resting.
