Before signing up for any of the Medicare
prescription drug plans, senior citizens with limited resources should
check to see if they are eligible for financial assistance. As part of
the news Medicare Prescription Drug Program, the government is providing
extra help. Depending on the individual circumstances, this program may
provide extra help to pay for the premiums, annual deductible, and
co-payments related to the drug program - an average of $2,100 in extra
help.
The Social Security Administration is determining
eligibility for this extra help and has provided an application on their
Website.
You should complete this application for extra help
on the Internet if:
● You have Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)
and/or Medicare Part B (Supplementary Medical Insurance), and
● You live in one of the 50 states or the
District of Columbia, and
● Your savings, investments, and real estate
(other than your home) are not worth more than $11,500, if you are
single, or $23,000 if you are married and living with your spouse. If
you have more than those amounts, you still may be eligible for this
extra help. To find out, you should call your state Medicaid agency.
However, you can still enroll with an approved Medicare prescription
drug provider for coverage.
Remember that this is an application for extra help
with the prescription drug costs. It is not an application for coverage
under a prescription drug plan. You will have to enroll directly with an
approved Medicare prescription drug provider for coverage.
Many are automatically eligible for this extra help
and you should not complete this application if:
● You receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
payments and have Medicare, or
● You receive Medicaid with prescription drug
coverage and have Medicare, or
● Your state pays for your Medicare premiums.
How Can You Get The Extra Help?
To get extra help with prescription drug costs, you
must complete and submit the online application. Social Security will
review your application and send you a letter to let you know if you
qualify for extra help. They also will send you information about the
Medicare Prescription Drug Program and tell you what you should do next.
